Kenya Ambassador in Spain, Mr. Bramwel Kisuya, who accepted the award, said:” In small cities and rural areas in Kenya, the public healthcare system is still growing, most of them are lacking adequate health facilities and the requisite experts, thus constraining the delivery of the residents’ health needs. Citizens need to travel to distant facilities, which often lead to delayed diagnosis or treatment. The government is working hard to build up health data, predict and manage the demand and supply of medicine, and assess the productivity of staff or workload in facilities to decide on staffing, training or facilities investment. The initiative and effort aim to provide good services to our people by bringing together companies, NGOs and other relevant partners to contribute their wisdom, strength and technologies to make people’s dream come true. MicroClinic is one of them. This award is not only to recognize MicroClinic for their endeavor, but also an appreciation of Kenya Government’s ’s commitment and resolve to ensure access and efficiency in the provision of medical and health services to the entire Nation in spite of limited resources. The Government of Kenya takes the initiative to encourage innovation, development and use of the relevant technologies to enhance the livelihoods of the potential users of the innovations and welcomes such initiatives from all willing partners as demonstrated by the presence of the Ministry of ICT of the Government of Kenya to promote them.”

Dr, Moka Lantum, Founder and Managing Director of Micro Clinic Technologies said, "The award is a proof that technology can change the world. We get great support from Huawei, and partner with the Ministries of Health and ICT in Kenya, the County Government of Lamu, the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) and WHO globally to ensure the initiative aligns with national policy, meets global development goals, and can be scaled-up and replicated."

To improve health in Lamu through appropriate use of ICT, the project achieves safe medical care. It also delivers more reliable data on disease trends; earlier, cheaper and better diagnosis and treatment; a better trained health workforce; and a more efficient healthcare system. Over 8,000 patients have been served since the digitization of the health system went into effect in Lamu, which sets benchmark for the rest of the nation. Yan Lida, president of Huawei Enterprise Business Group said, "Huawei telemedicine provides health expertise to towns and rural areas. With the easy-to-use, multi-platform video conference and cloud platform, the digitizing of Lamu County’s entire health sector covers 28 facilities benefitting 200,000 people. With more health facilities gaining grid or solar electricity and internet connections (fiber or mobile), ICT technologies can help solve these challenges and meet the priorities of the Health and ICT Ministries in Kenya (and similar countries)."

The low-cost, pay-per-use approach digital service delivery ensures sustainability beyond the support from Huawei, which is an innovative part of the project. The digital health solution implemented in Lamu is a scalable and replicable model for the whole of Kenya. This award is a recognition of MicroClinic and Huawei’s commitment to the Every Woman Every Child initiative of the UN. The charge to eliminate poverty and build health systems in underserved communities across the globe is one that both companies embrace.
